The premier institute for imparting education in sciences, IIT Bombay, offers master level courses in molecular biology and biotechnology, which is supported by Department of Biotechnology. The institute recently shifted to a new building with more expansive lab facilities for its faculty and students. The faculty have a wide background ranging from biomedical engineering, nanotechnology, biological sciences thus offering a spectrum of specialized guidance.

The institute has a high research output with 38 papers published in international journals and seven international patents filed, since 2011 with 10 products or processes being developed along the way. Admission to the MSc courses is conducted though a Joint Admission Test (JAM) for MSc, which receives more than 3,000 applications, while admissions for the PhD program are through other competitive exams such as CSIR-NET, GATE and programs such as DST INSPIRE and SW-IITB Monash collaboration.

The institute in addition to being a national protein sequencing facility which consists of protein sequencer and MALDI-TOF, has other sophisticated equipment as well. The department has also undertaken a number of industry sponsored projects, worth Rs 3.14 crore and government sponsored projects worth Rs 17.84 crore.
