Top 20: Maharashtra, Bangalore top the charts

The Southern region has the biggest cluster of biotech companies, followed by the West

BioSpectrum ranks the most prominent biotech clusters based on the revenue generated by the companies headquartered in a specific place.

South and West are the two major regions where the biotech companies are headquartered. Southern region is the largest biocluster with 46.5 percent share and West is closely behind it with 43.3 percent share. Companies from south recorded Rs 11,707 crore ($2.1 billion) in sales, while those from West registered Rs 10,905.6 crore ($1.9 billion).

North with 10 percent share accounted for Rs 2552.31 crore ($450 million) Maharashtra is the top biotech state. It is followed by Karnataka with 30 percent share and revenue contribution of Rs 7,574.67 crore ($1.33
billion). Karnataka is closely followed by the newly created state Telangana (Hyderabad region) with 20 percent share contributing Rs 5,063 crore in sales.

The second largest biotech city after Bangalore is Hyderabad with 19 percent share and revenues of Rs 4,986.5 crore. It is followed by Pune with 16 percent share and Mumbai with 15 percent share respectively.

Bangalore is the top biotech city in 2013-14 with total revenues of Rs 7,086 crore and accounted for 28.2 percent.

Maharashtra is top biotech state in the country with 38.2 percent share of the total biotech revenues of Rs 25,165 crore. Companies based in the state generated Rs 9,609.8 crore ($1.7 billion) in sales.
