Out of 29 final year students, 26 from the department of molecular biology and biotechnology at Tezpur University, have chosen higher research in 2012-13. The department has a strong teaching program as evident from a significant number of students qualifying for GATE, DBT-JRF, ICMR -JRF and UGC-CSIR NET. Most of the passed out MSc and PhD students from the department are pursuing higher studies (doctoral and post-doctoral research) in some of the premiere research institutes/universities in the country and abroad.

10 students were admitted for the seats reserved for North-East quota, out of the total 30 students enrolled in the year 2012-13. The rest 20 seats were filled through all India examination conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University.

At present, there are 16 faculty members in the department from different specializations. Significantly, the faculty members have also been able to attract large research grants in the recent years. Since June 2008, the department has so far published 21 research papers in national journals and 128 research papers in international journals. Also, the department has filed four national and two international patents. During 2007-10, the department has developed two biotech related products that were subsequently transferred to the industry.

The infrastructure of the department has also been enhanced with the inclusion of sophisticated instruments. A departmental library, DBT supported bioinformatics facility also support the teaching and research programs of the department. Since 2010, the department has utilized Rs 12.58 crore provided by various government agencies and completed Rs 1.32 crore worth industry sponsored projects.
