For the BE biotechnology course at New Horizon College of Engineering, which is affiliated to Visveswaraya Technological University (VTU) and NBA accredited, the admission is based on the marks obtained in higher secondary board exams. The doctoral program is affiliated to both VTU and Tumkur University. The number of publications by the department has increased over the last academic year to six papers in international and three in national journals respectively.

Some of the focus areas for the department include plant tissue culture, enzyme technology, bioprocess technology, immunotechnology, microbiology and biochemistry. The department has been conducting research with facilities that includes 6 laboratories, and has recently applied for two international patents based on the research conducted. It has also undertaken industry and government sponsored projects worth Rs.5 lakh and Rs 1.98 lakh respectively. Though the department organized campus placements, a large number of them chose to pursue higher studies. The department has also organized events such as seminars and conferences.
