Sparsh Hospital receives license to conduct hand transplant

SPARSH Super Speciality Hospital, Bengaluru’s leading hospital chain, has become the first hospital in Karnataka to be licensed to conduct hand transplant surgeries.

SPARSH has established a special facility to perform cadaveric transplantation of hand and upper limb focused towards upper limb amputees. Many people lose their upper limbs for various reasons including accident, this has a deep physical and psychological impact on the individual and society. This hampers their day to day activities and means of living. Hand Transplantation restores functions sensation proprioception voluntary motor control making the person whole and complete.

Hand transplants have been successfully done across the world, and in a few centers in India. However, there is no special unit in Karnataka so far.

SPARSH’s special unit will be led by Dr. Anand K, recently appointed Chief of Cosmetics, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the hospital’s Infantry Road unit.

Commenting on the license, Dr. Anand said, “We are proud to be the first hospital in Karnataka to be able to perform cadaveric hand transplant. These are successful in the world but we want to do this at SPARSH as well. Now, with this, we will be giving a new lease of life to people who struggle every day without the support of their limbs. Anyone, who has lost both the limbs can get the benefit of the hand transplant program and interested individual can contact SPARSH Hospitals.”

SPARSH Hospital, which gained international recognition for its Orthopaedic services, transitioned to a Super Specialty hospital. The hospital chain has expanded their services to include Gastroenterology, Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Cosmetic & Reconstructive surgery along with all organ transplant and all other sub speciality services.
