Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore along with Chirayu Hospital conducted first ever kidney transplant in Kalaburagi, part of Hyderabad-Karnataka border.

The team of doctors was led by Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Director- Urology, Uro oncology, Andrology, Transplant & Robotic surgery, Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore.

The 38-year-old patient was suffering from chronic renal failure and was on hemodialysis. He was in urgent need for a kidney transplant when his wife promptly came forward to donate her kidney.

Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy said, “With increasing life expectancy and prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and unhealthy lifestyle, there has been a significant increase in chronic kidney diseases in India. There is a huge need for specialized Uro-Nephro facility with the ability to perform kidney transplant in remote areas of the country for patients with renal failure. The availability of appropriate treatment and care at the doorstep in the middle of Hyderabad- Karnataka region catering to 15 million citizens which was hitherto unavailable, will help the patients to get back to productive life at minimal distance, instead of traveling to far-off metro cities for medical treatment.”

The Fortis Urology team comprises of 18 qualified urologists, performing over 10,000 surgeries, in a 360 compass in a year. The team covers over 15 locations in Karnataka and surrounding states and 7 locations in Asia and Africa.
