Dr Jitendra Singh calls for leveraging regional strengths to build robust bioinnovation ecosystem

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh, called for leveraging regional strengths to build a robust Bioinnovation ecosystem with active involvement of the States.

The Minister was chairing a review meeting of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), where he assessed ongoing projects and new initiatives aimed at expanding India’s bio-innovation landscape. He reviewed a range of new projects - from biofoundries and regional innovation hubs to the ongoing mapping of states based on their biotechnology potential — aimed at strengthening the country’s bioeconomy through innovation, collaboration, and local participation.

The Minister emphasised the need to strengthen local biotechnology ecosystems by leveraging regional strengths and fostering greater collaboration with state governments and local stakeholders.

DBT officials presented the Ministry’s recent initiatives focused on expanding bio-foundries and fostering new partnerships between research bodies and industries. These bio-foundries are expected to provide a platform for rapid design, testing, and scaling of biotechnological solutions, bridging the gap between scientific discovery and application.

The Minister called upon DBT to deepen its engagement with state governments, universities, and local industries to unlock the economic potential of biotechnology at the grassroots level. 

The review concluded with a call to accelerate project implementation and strengthen inter-governmental collaboration, marking a renewed push towards making India a global hub for biotechnology-driven innovation and sustainable growth.
