Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS) (Formerly Karnataka Biotechnology and Information Technology Services), is going to develop a State-level Biomanufacturing Hub through collaborative efforts in the coming period in Bengaluru. In this regard, KITS is actively engaging with industry partners such as Anthem Biosciences and Laurus Bio.

Responding to the industry’s need and industry stakeholders who emphasised the need to establish Karnataka as a leading destination for biomanufacturing by developing a dedicated Biomanufacturing Hub in the state, the state government is actively working on setting up a Biomanufacturing Hub. This was disclosed at ‘Conversation with the Chief Minister of Karnataka - the Action Taken Report’ released on 11 August 2025.

It may be noted that the biotechnology industry from the state has urged the Government to take proactive steps to support the creation of such infrastructure through national programmes and state-industry collaboration during the ‘Conversation with Chief Minister’ - CEO Breakfast Meet’ held last August.

Meanwhile the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), an initiative supported by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India with the support of Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India (BIRAC-DBT) is establishing a Biomanufacturing Hub (Bio foundry) in Bengaluru.

The hub enables precommercial scale biomanufacturing of viable commercial bio-based products. It leverages engineering microbial, plant, animal and human cells with increasing precision and control to produce commercially important products. In addition to enabling India’s emissions reduction goals, Biomanufacturing will also have a transformative impact across diverse sectors of health, agriculture, food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, materials, biofuels, etc.
