Genomics India Conference (GIC) 2023, a two-day genomics conference, opened on 2 February 2023 at NIMHANS Convention Centre in Bengaluru, to bring together industry, academia and research with core focus on current trends and advancements in genomics.

Amongst many interesting sessions, a discussion with industry experts was organised to simplify the concept of bio-entrepreneurship highlighting factors such as risk management, policy mapping, strategic backup etc.

Prof Samir Brahmachari, Former Director General, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) said, "An entrepreneur needs to follow the government policy while executing a new idea. For instance, the Union budget 2023-24 has put emphasis on artificial intelligence. So the time is ripe for digital healthcare ideas. Following the existing policy is critical but strong communities of biotech can influence development of new policies."

Adding his thoughts, Dr Raja Mugasimangalam, Founder & CEO, Genotypic Technology & QTLomics; Chairman – iBioM said, "A strategic backup is very important for a bio-entrepreneur before executing any new idea. One should be clear with all ideas when the right opportunity knocks in." 

Dr Manjiri Bakre Founder and CEO, OncoStem Diagnostics highlighted, "An entrepreneur should discuss his/her ideas with customers to be able to sell what one is making. One cannot be risk-free in any job or field. Some form of risk comes along in every job, not just entrepreneurship."

Concluding the session, Prof Brahmachari said that this is the right time to screen bio-entrepreneurs genetically with new-age genomics technologies to set a new future.
