The Pune Biotech Cluster, a joint initiative between the National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune set up with funding from the Department of Biotechnology has been inaugurated at the NCCS by Dr. Renu Swarup, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India.

The project has been formulated with the goal of seamlessly integrating the high-quality work being done at various research organizations in the field of Biology, especially those addressing human disease biology. The Pune Biotech Cluster will draw its strengths from the rich research and academic ecosystem in Pune and would strive to impart high quality access and training to high end facilities including Bioimaging Facility (NCCS and IISER Pune); Proteomics Facility (NCCS); BSL-III Facility (NCCS); Whole Animal Imaging and Tissue Processing Facility (IISER Pune); and Cryo-electron Microscopy (IISER Pune).

This initiative plans to set up a pyramidal structure, comprising research institutions, universities and other academic institutions along with biotechnology industries with a goal to set up a shared platform of national resources in an integrated manner. The academic institutions and industries would have the opportunity to take full advantage of each other's expertise in developing training modalities in the area of biomedical imaging and analysis including developing whole animal imaging facilities.

The Pune Biotech Cluster would liaise with the local community including start-ups and international entities for dissemination of knowledge and to learn from each other’s experience.
