Joins 'most preferred' club


Established in 1986, the school of biotechnology at Banaras Hindu University is among the top three preferred biotech programs in the country. In the academic year 2011-12, 19 students were admitted out of 27 applications received by the school from joint entrance examination held by JNU.

Around 253 biotech related research papers have been so far published in the international journals.The best achievement for the department was that the percentage of students qualifying in national test for fellowships was 100 percent. The school has been the proud recipient of a letter of appreciation from Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. DBT in its letter dated November, 2011 has praised the MSc programs of the school and ranked it among top few.

12-Shivaji University, Kolhapur
Looking at placement offers


Shivaji University's department of biotechnology was established in 2003. The MSc molecular biology and biotechnology course is recognized by the UGC, State Government of Maharashtra.

For academic year 2011-12, there were 440 forms received for the MSc (Ag) molecular biology and biotechnology, out of which 30 students were enrolled for the course. Presently, there are 22 PhD students working in the department. There are nine full-time faculty members having a work experience of more than five years. The department also invites visiting faculty to deliver lectures to students.

In terms of infrastructure, the department has 10 labs having a capacity to accommodate 15 students. Between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2012, a total of 69 research papers were published in international journals, while five papers were published in national journals.

13-Kumaun University, Uttarakhand
Providing balanced facilities


The department of biotechnology at Kumaun University was established in the year 2000. The activities of the department are focused on quality teaching program. During the year 2011-12, the number of students admitted to MSc program stood at eight out of 15 applications received by the department. The admissions are based on the All India Entrance Examination conducted by JNU, New Delhi and supported by DBT.

The department has signed MOUs with most of the ICAR and CSIR institutes of the region for networking projects, use of lab facilities and registering their research fellows for PhD. The department has all modern facilities in terms of equipment, chemicals, and glasswares. Since 2003, 32 research papers from the department have been published in the national journals and 38 in international journals.

14-University of Burdwan, West Bengal
Exploring the Arctic


Established in September 2003, the department of biotechnology at the University of Burdwan (NAAC accredited) has been supported by DBT since 2006, both for infrastructure development and for assistance to the students.

Out of the 150 applications received for the course, a total of 25 students were selected for the year 2011-12. Apart from two general labs for routine practicals, the department also has a specialized laboratory. The department has published 35 research papers in international journals and seven research papers in national journals. A recent development has been the project on “exploration of Arctic micro-organisms� where the department has been included in the national program organized by National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research, Goa.

15-Govt Post Graduate College Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh
60 years of service


Government Post Graduate College, Bilaspur was established in 1952 and is one of the oldest and most prestigious colleges of Himachal Pradesh. This college has been notified by the university as one of the top five colleges among the 72 colleges affiliated to university. Accredited with B++ Grade by NAAC, this college has established a glorious record of excellence and notable achievements in academics, sports, cultural and other fields over the last fifty six years. Since 2008, the college has published four research papers in national and one in international publications respectively. The college provides education in arts, science and commerce facilities. The college has well equipped laboratories, along with NCC and NSS facilities.
