Serum launches Pyginal

Pune-based Serum International Ltd (SIL), a subsidiary of Serum Institute of India Ltd, has launched a new drug Pygeum Africanum Soft Gelatin Capsules called 'Pyginal' for benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH). BPH is an age related prostate gland problem occurring in males after the age of 40-45 years. BPH occurs because of enlargement of the prostate gland which is an important organ of the male reproductive system. Pyginal is a phytochemical drug extracted from the bark of Pygeum Africanum, a tree found in south and central Africa. Pyginal offers anti –inflammatory, anti oedema and hypocholesterolemic action. Pyginal has shown significant improvement in BPH symptoms and reduction in the prostate size.

Bharat Bio launches typhoid vaccine

Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech International Ltd has come out with another product in preventive and affordable healthcare by launching Typbar. This is a highly purified Vi capsular polysaccharide typhoid vaccine. In the clinical trails the vaccine showed excellent protective efficacy. The protective efficacy is based on the titre of IgG, as this specific antibody is known to be the protective antibody in the immunoglobulin family. The trials showed no adverse reactions. Typbar, produced with an investment of Rs 17 crore, is the second vaccine from Bharat after its successful hepatitis B vaccine, Revac-B, launched in 1998.

Toshibha (India) brings out biohood

Toshibha (India), manufacturer of biological safety cabinets, has come out with a biohazard cabinet named as biohood. This offers operators protection from low to moderate risk biological agents (or chemical carcinogens) while providing a sterile work environment for the procedure. It has applications in isolation and identification of plant/ human pathogens, work in virology, tissue culture, sterility testing and recombinant DNA research. Toshibha has designed this biological safety cabinet especially for wet processing, chemical work, critical biological work involving virus and pathogens and for microbiology, biochemistry etc. The cabinet has to be kept under negative pressure with partial quantity of re-circulated air exhausted through a filter. External exhaust from the laboratory is optional.

Bhat Bio-Tech develops Pareekshak HIV tri line card test

Bhat Bio-Tech India Pvt Ltd, Bangalore has developed a wide range of diagnostic kits for testing HIV. The HIV test ranges include rapid tests - Pareekshak HIV –1/2 rapid spot test, HIV –1/2 membrane ELISA and rapid card tests. The Pareekshak HIV-1/2 ELISA is a solid phase non-competitive sandwich ELISA with HRP and TMB as chromogen. This is the third generation rapid test developed by Bhat Bio-Tech that uses specific antigens with colloidal gold dye conjugate and detects IgG, IgA, and IgM antibodies. The product is sensitive even in early infection and detects low antibody levels there by reducing the window period. Using Pareekshak HIV tri line card test one can easily differentiate HIV 1 and 2 by clear line formation.
