Department of
Biotechnology
Department of Biotechnology at Jamia Millia Islamia, was established in
2008. It offers BSc, MSc and PhD courses in biotechnology.
Prior to this, during 2001-07, BSc and MSc in
biotechnology were offered in the department of biosciences of the
university. At present, its student intake capacity is 30 and 20 for
MSc. and BSc, respectively. In 2009, seat to applicant ratio for BSc
and MSc courses were 1:72 and 1:50 respectively, making it
the
most popular courses in the university. So far, six batches of MSc and
five batches of BSc who have obtained their degrees are well placed in
the prestigious institutions like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, MAMC
(University of Delhi), AIIMS, New Delhi, NICD (Indian Council of
Medical Research, Ministry of Health) and in reputed industries linked
to biotechnology.
More than 45 students have qualified for
the UGC,
CSIR, ICMR, & DBT, NET JRFs. Master’s degree in
biotechnology
program is so popular. In an all India survey, it was rated among top
20 biotech programs for the last two consecutive years.
The department is headed by Prof. (Dr) Arif Ali,
who was
also the co-coordinator of MSc in biotechnology course since its
inception. Prof. Ali, who’s involved in research related to
environmental biotechnology has published nearly 60 research articles
in journals of international and national repute. The fully-equipped
research labs of the department is funded by various government
agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DBT, ICMR and DST; with around 25 PhD
research fellows working on various advance research topics. The
department has tied-up with several research groups in the USA, UK,
Germany and Italy for research purposes.
