Tezpur University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1994. The
Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBBT) was started in
July 24, 1997. The department runs a two-year program leading
to the master’s degree in MBBT. This department has been
recognized by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of
India, and granted accreditations for the postgraduate program. The
objective of the department is to contribute to the advancement of the
emerging areas of basic and applied life sciences and to create trained
manpower in the field of molecular biotechnology. The integrated MSc
program (five years) in bioscience and bioinformatics has been recently
introduced in the department. The MSc program of the department is
sponsored by DBT. Students are admitted through the all India combined
biotechnology entrance examination. Out of 20 seats, eight are reserved
for the domiciles of North East India.
The library has 43, 080 volumes of print collection and subscribed 249
titles of current journals, 476 electronic journals through different
consortium, two databases and one knowledge portal. The library
provides access facility to 4,904 e-journals, two databases and one
gateway portal provided by UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium of
INFLIBNET Center. The university’s computer center has
implemented a campus LAN with optical fiber backbone connecting the
academic as well as administrative departments that spread over an area
of 241 acres.
