NIV showcases its key diagnostic kits on Nadda's visit

NIV has three units located at Gorakhpur, Kerala and Bangalore. The unit at Bangalore has a polio-monitoring center.

On February 14, 2015, the health and family welfare minister, Mr Jagat Prakash Nadda visited the institute. Dr D T Mourya, director, National Institute of Virology welcomed him and accompanied him to Biosafety level-4 laboratory. Dr Mourya briefed him about vision, mission and mandate of the institute. He also explained how the institute has been serving nation for benefit of human health by working on water borne infections, zoonotic diseases, arboviral diseases, highly infectious diseases of emerging and reemerging nature for 64 years. Minister was also briefed that NIV, Pune is a premier institute of ICMR and also provides integral support in national and international emergency for viral diseases like Ebola, Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever, Nipah, MERS-corona virus, pandemic and avian influenza, and many more viral diseases.

Recently, institute has developed many important technologies of public health importance. Tissue culture derived vaccine against Japanese encephalitis has been launched by India as first indigenously developed vaccine of country. The institute has also developed ELISA kits for detection of IgG antibody against CCHFV bovine and Sheep and Goat IgG antibody detection, CCHFV Human IgG antibody detection ELISA, KFD Human IgM antibody detection ELISA, Immunodiagnostic development for HEV, Chandipura virus IgM ELISA and also detection of JE virus from mosquito using monoclonal antibody based antigen capture ELISA. The minister was informed that these technologies are ready to transfer to industry.

NIV has three units located at Gorakhpur, Kerala and Bangalore. The unit at Bangalore has a polio-monitoring center. Being a premier institute, it is involved in providing diagnostic kits for whole country to diagnose JE, WN, dengue and chikungunya viral
diseases surveillance program.
