To augment learning resources and promote interdisciplinary research, VIT has consolidated different disciplines into nine Schools of Excellence

The objective of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is to create a dynamic environment that facilitates interaction and dialogue. Qualified faculty members assigned with various theory subjects prepare course plans using the standard format provided by the institute with emphasis on learning of the students. The instructional or lecture delivery of the faculty will be through a set of educational technology/tools opted by the faculty.

The university follows a transparent mechanism for admission. It administers its own entrance examination, VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) at 189 centers in 71 cities across India for admission to BTech program. Year-after-year, VITEEE has been gaining popularity. Similarly, it administers VIT Masters Entrance Examination (VITMEE) for the MTech program.

Courses offered by each school are designed to incorporate a blend of knowledge, skills and the right attitude. The curriculum of each program is revised periodically to enable students to be in tune with the needs of the industry.

The School of Biosciences and Technology offers undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral programs in biomedical engineering, medical genetics, applied microbiology, biotechnology and bioinformatics.

The school has 110 full-time faculty members with 87 of them possessing a PhD degree. The school has published 140 research papers in national and international journals between 2007 and 2010.

The programs of the school cover the latest developments and are designed on the basis of technological and industrial requirements. The school has collaborations with national and international institutes and multinational companies. It hosts visiting scientists and encourages joint R&D work between academia and industry. It has strong links with Defense Bioengineering and Electro Medical Laboratories, Bangalore; Central Scientific and Instrument Organization, Chandigarh; Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, New Delhi; Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore; and Piramal Life Sciences, Mumbai.

The school has filed three Indian patents and two international between 2007 and 2010 and has been granted with one Indian patent to its credit. Several R&D projects of the school are funded by the DBT, DRDO, DST and core industries.
