Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda's Department of Microbiology
and Biotechnology was started in 1964, and since 1985, it offers MSc
biotechnology course in addition to the master's course in
microbiology.
The post MSc diploma in genetic engineering and bioprocess development
has been recently initiated, and is a specialized one year course with
a total intake of 10 students. According to Prof Bharat Bhushan
Chattoo, coordinator, Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology
Center, there are many people from the industry applying for this
course and half of the seats for this course are industry sponsored.
Courses for the department, at regular intervals, are devised and
introduced by a board of members, drawn both from the academia as well
as from the industry. This keeps the department in tune with the trends
and demands of the time.
The program begins with a fundamental courses in biochemistry,
genetics, microbiology and molecular biology and then proceed to a
thorough study of their selected area of specialization. Students are
also given basic training in developmental biology, genetic
engineering, biochemical engineering and some aspects of biophysics,
biostatistics and environmental biology.
The biotechnology training program was started with support from NBTB
(DBT) and UGC. In 2003, the department had produced 90 PhDs and a large
number of research papers are regularly published in journals of
international repute.
