The School of Life Sciences at UoH is active in conducting research programs
and has filed five national and four international patents so far
University of Hyderabad (UoH) is an institute that focuses on post-graduate teaching and research. The School of Life
Sciences at UoH is ranked No.3 in this year's survey. The university was established as a central university by a
Parliament Act in 1974.
The university also offers courses under distance learning programs and is a member of the Association of Indian
Universities (AIU), the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and International Council for Distance
Education. Since 1988, an academic staff college has been functioning in the university campus under the University
Grants Commission (UGC) scheme for improving the standards of teaching in colleges and universities. The college
organizes orientation and refresher courses for colleges and university teachers.
The School of Life Sciences offers post-graduate and PhD courses in biotech. MSc in biotech was started in 1990,
the admission is through JNU common entrance and the intake capacity is 16; MSc in plant biotech was started in
2004 and has 20 seats, while MSc in animal biotech was started in 2000 and has 28 seats; MTech in medical biotech
and bioinformatics courses were started in 2003 and 2006 with 14 and 22 seats respectively; and PhD in biotech was
started in 2009 and has 18 seats. The university also offers an integrated MSc in system biology.
After completing MSc in biotech, students undertake one year project work in one of the areas of the research in
the school of life sciences. As part of the curriculum, students are also exposed to Intellectual Property Rights
(IPR) and entrepreneurial skills.
Researchers at the university have published several research papers in both national and international journals.
Between June 2007 and May 2010, the institute has published 40 research papers in national and international
journals. While from June 2003 to May 2007, the university has published 18 research papers in national journals
and 128 papers in international journals.
The department has 44 highly-qualified and experienced faculty members. The institute is active in conducting
research programs and has filed five national and four international patents. The institute has received government
