Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering started BE biotechnology course in 2003 with the support of Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust (RSST). The department of biotechnology at RV College of Engineering was established in 2003. The department was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in 2008.

The college is ranked No.1 in infrastructure score in the 6th BioSpectrum Biotech School Survey 2010. In placement score, the college is ranked No.5. In total, the college has 12 labs dedicated to biotech students. The biotech department has 20 well-qualified and experienced faculty members who have specialized in various disciplines of biotechnology and 10 of them are PhD holders. The faculty to student ratio of the biotech department is 1:13.

The department is recognized as the research center from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka. The department has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bangalore, and the Karnataka State Women's University (KSWU) Bijapur. Various funded projects from government and industries are sanctioned to faculty members of the college to carry out research on various biotech-related topics.

The courses offered by the biotech department are the combination of engineering sciences, core sciences, basic sciences, humanities and subjects related to immune technology, upstream downstream processing, plant tissue culture, biopharmaceuticals, agricultural biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, pharmaceutical biotechnology and forensic sciences along with fully-modified and well-equipped laboratories that are in line and compliant with current demand of the industry.

The staff and students at Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering have been undergoing training and taking up collaborative projects at the leading industries and institutions related to the fields such as Waters India, Biocon, NIMHANS, KIDWAI Cancer Institute, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, IISc, and Indian Veterinary Research Institute.

The major areas of research happening at the college are in renewable energy, hydrogen economy, membrane-based separation techniques, conversion of coal and wastes to liquid fuels, plant tissue culture, molecular biology, genetic engineering and nano-particles-based purification of proteins.

So far, the department has published 20 scientific papers in national and international journals.
