Five Padma Awards go to life sciences

Distinguished scientist Dr S Ramachandran; Dr K Anji Reddy, founder and chairman, Dr Reddy Group of Companies; Dr K Raghavendra Rao, founder, Orchid Chemicals; Dr Suman Sahai, founder of Gene Campaign with a distinguished scientific career in the field of genetics; and Mr Analjit Singh, founder and chairman, Max India; are among the 128 dignitaries who have been selected for  the Padma civilian awards this year.






Dr S Ramachandran who has been chosen for the Padma Bhushan was the first secretary of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. The Chennai-born scientist’s works aimed at  developing modern biology through various DBT programs.

Mr Analjit Singh, founder and chairman of Max India Group, a clinical research and healthcare company, has been conferred with Padma Bhushan Award. He has been the driving force behind the group’s sustained growth and success since the mid-1980s.


Dr K Anji Reddy, a recipient of  Padma Shri in 2001, has been chosen for Padma Bhushan for his leadership role in developing Dr Reddy’s Laboratories as a top innovative drug research and discovery firm in India.



Dr K Raghavendra Rao, founder of Orchid Chemicals, a leading pharmaceutical company headquartered in Chennai, has been selected for Padma Shri Award. With exports covering more than 75 countries, Orchid is ranked amongst the Top-5 cephalosporin producers in the world.


Dr Suman Sahai, founder of Gene Campaign with a distinguished scientific career in the field of genetics was conferred with  Padma Shri in social work category.

FABA announces Special Award 2011
Dr Davinder S Brar, chairman, GVK Biosciences and Dr Roger L Williams, CEO, United States Pharmacopeia (USP) have bagged Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) Special Award 2011. The awards will be presented to them on the inaugural day of BioAsia 2011 on February 22, 2011, in Hyderabad.
