Vidya Pratishthan has 11 laboratories dedicated to biotech students and it carries out research projects in emerging areas of biotechnology

Affiliated to the University of Pune, Vidya Pratishthan's School of Biotechnology, is ranked No.1 in industry interaction and No.6 in infrastructure score in the 6th BioSpectrum Biotech School Survey. The school offers BTech in biotechnology, and MSc (Ag), MVSc and PhD in molecular biology and biotechnology. The school has seven full-time faculty members with more than five years of work experience and six of them are PhD holders. There are 38 visiting faculty members, out of which 28 are PhD holders and 10 members are from the industry. Between June 1, 2007, and May 31, 2010, six research papers from the school were published in international journals. In total, there are 11 laboratories solely for biotechnology students with each laboratory having the capacity to accommodate 11 students. The labs are allotted for genomics, proteomics, animal biotechnology, plant biotechnology, bio-nanotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, bioinstrumentation, fermentation, bioinformatics and environmental biotechnology. The school is involved in a couple of interesting research projects. For instance, the ongoing projects in bioinformatics lab are in-silico analysis of non-coding RNA gene responsible for Alzheimer's disease, and Quorum sensing: bacterial LuxI and LuxR quorum sensing regulators, 16S rDNA sequence data analysis and database designing. Projects under genomics include cDNA library construction from aegle marmelos and syzygium cumini (project funded by ICAR, New Delhi), and morphometry and phylogeography of honeybees and stingless bees in India (Funded by the DBT, New Delhi). Total value of industry-sponsored projects commissioned between June 1, 2007, and May 31, 2010, came up to 75,000 while the total value of government-sponsored projects commissioned between the same period came up to 14.50 crore. In terms of capital expenditure, the total cost of subscription to biotech-related books between June 1, 2009, to May 31, 2010, came up to 44,564. The amount spent on laboratory equipments in the same period came up to 1.65 lakh while the cost of consumables like reagents and biologicals came up to 5.97 lakh. In the academic year 2009-10, 24 MSc students completed their course, among them 11 students are pursuing higher studies and seven of them are qualified for JRF/ CSIR programs. The school also organizes campus placement interviews.
