Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is one of the leading agrotechnology
provider in India established on June 1, 1971, in Coimbatore, Tamil
Nadu. The university offers 10 undergraduate degree programs and 29
postgraduate programs in 10 colleges. Besides, the university has 32
research stations for agrotechnology development. In the life sciences
stream the university offers BTech in biotechnology and
bioinformatics, MSc in biotechnology and PhD in biotechnology. BTech in
biotechnology was started in the year 2002 and has an intake capacity
of 43 students; BTech in bioinformatics was started in 2006 and has an
intake capacity of 31 students; MSc in biotechnology was started in
1989 with an intake capacity of 18 students; and PhD in biotechnology
was started in 1991 with an intake capacity of three students.
All the above courses are affiliated to Tamil Nadu
Agricultural University and recognized by the Department of
Biotechnology (DBT). The university has four dedicated biotech
laboratories that are furnished with modern equipments to enhance the
research-based activities. Each lab has the capacity to accommodate 40
students at a time. The research centers like the Center for Plant
Breeding and Genetics (CPBG), Center for Plant Molecular Biology (CPMB)
that focus on agricultural microbiology, biochemistry and biotechnology
researches; Center for Soil and Crop Management Studies (SCMS); and
Center of Plant Protection Studies (CPPS) that are located within the
university campus provides a wealth of knowledge to the budding
researchers and aspiring biotech students.
The university has allotted 35 computers with broadband internet
facilities for biotech students. Faculties of the university have
experience and expertise in their own field and had published several
research papers in both national and international journals.
