Thomson Reuters, the world's leading source of information for businesses and professionals, on December 05, 2013 acknowledged India's top innovators at the Thomson Reuters India Innovation Awards 2013. First established in 2007, the Awards recognize the most innovative
academic institutions and commercial enterprises headquartered in India for their spirit of innovation in Research & Development (R&D).

Among the organizations that were awarded at the ceremony were Reliance Industries Limited under 'Hi-Tech Corporate' category; Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) in Hi-Tech Academic & Government' category and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals under 'Pharma Corporate corporate category. The National Institute of Immunology (NII) too received the award under 'Pharma Academic & Government' category.

This year's guest of honor at the event was Dr. T. Ramasami, secretary to the government of India, Department of Science & Technology. The ceremony was attended by more than 150 guests comprising researchers, scientists and heads of pharmaceutical and technology companies,
academics, intellectual property (IP) analysts and searchers, and patent examiners.

Commenting on their recognition in the Hi-Tech Academic & Government category, Professor Samir K Brahmachari, Director General, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research said, "CSIR today is globally benchmarked and is recognized as a successful model of post independence India's innovation system that provides globally competitive, affordable technological solutions to diverse sectors, from leather to generic drugs, pesticides to tractors, glass and ceramics to industrial catalysts, and from minerals and
metals to advance materials."

"Today New CSIR is full of promise for New India" and marching ahead from generic to genomic medicine and leading the world in open innovation to protection of traditional knowledge with a focus on S&T intervention for the people at the base of the economic pyramid of India," added Professor
Brahmachari.

Winner of the Pharma Academic & Government category, Dr Chandrima Shaha, director, National Institute of Immunology, added, We would like to make a difference to the nation by developing innovative technologies in the laboratory through discoveries spawned by basic scientific inquiry and
developing them for use by the society. Our aspirations are to solve daunting problems in health emerging in modern times."
