NM Medical unveils Mumbai's first Open Standing MRI machine

NM Medical has announced the launch of Mumbai's first Open Standing MRI machine. The new facility is now operational at NM Medical's center at Marine Lines, Mumbai.

Conventional closed MRI machines require patients to lie still inside a narrow tunnel. This Open Standing MRI allows imaging in sitting, standing, and lying positions instead. This helps radiologists assess the spine, joints, and musculoskeletal system under natural, weight bearing conditions, in the same postures where many patients usually feel pain.

It is especially suited for patients with claustrophobia or anxiety, elderly patients, patients with mobility challenges, and those who find conventional scanners restrictive. Capturing images while the body bears its own weight can reveal spinal and joint problems that may not show up on a scan taken lying down. This helps doctors decide between conservative treatment and surgery and supports more accurate surgical planning.

The machine uses advanced G Scan (Gravity Scan) technology, with Q Spine software for detailed analysis of the spine under load, and True Motion technology to capture movement of joints and the cervical spine. The open design removes the confined tunnel found in traditional MRI machines. Scans do not involve ionising radiation, and most examinations are completed within 20 to 45 minutes.
