A group of research engineers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee has develop a new solution for treating cancer.

The new method termed as Photo Thermal Therapy works on the concept of targeted drug delivery into the afflicted area with the use of light.

Since ultraviolet rays are harmful to cellular targets, the researchers have looked at an alternative method that is metal-nitrosyls, which can be used under visible light for the release of Nitric Oxide (NO).

According to researchers, the experimental results showed that the photo-released NO was cytotoxic and was responsible for death of the cancerous cells.

The researchers are hopeful that there will be further investigations on the use of such activity in treatment of other diseases as well.
