The Department of Biotechnology at Shree Manibhai Virani & Smt Navalben Virani Science College is affiliated to Saurashtra University. Established in 1999, the department offers BSc, MSc and PhD courses. Furthermore the college also offers vocational courses at first degree level (certificate/diploma/advanced diploma) in plant tissue culture, bioinformatics, plant molecular biology, environmental auditing, communication skill development and polymer chemistry under the 'Career Oriented Program' scheme of the UGC.

All the students are enrolled by common entrance test conducted by the institute followed by personal interview. A total number of 40 students were enrolled for the MSc course for academic year 2009-10. The certificate and diploma courses in plant tissue, bioinformatics and plant molecular genetics and biotechnology had a total intake of 30 students each during the academic year 2009-10.

There are total 25 faculty members out of which 11 have an experience of more than five years. Between June 2007 and May 2010 the department has published 10 scientific research papers in national journals and nine in international journals.

Total value of new industry-sponsored projects commissioned between June 2007 and May 2010 clocked at 5 lakh, while total value of government-sponsored projects commissioned during the same period came up to 117 lakh. In terms of capital expenditure, the total cost incurred on purchase of lab equipment during the academic year amounted to 35.6 lakh, while cost of consumables like reagents and biologicals was 9.2 lakh. There are a total of nine laboratories allotted for biotech students with each lab accommodating 40 students. The institute also brings in life sciences companies for campus interviews and placements.

This year, a total number of 36 students from the MSc department, were placed through campus interviews. Some of the companies that conducted campus interviews include Amul-R&D Center, Ayushi Biotech, Alembic, Ban Labs, Cadila Pharmaceuticals, Chiron Behring Vaccines, Claris Life Sciences, Comed Chemicals, Gujarat Lifesciences, Span Diagnostics, Intas pharmaceuticals, Maps India, Torrent Gujarat Biotech, Zydus Research Center, Excel Crop Care, Vadilal Industries, Zandu Foundation For Healthcare, Reliance Life Sciences and Wockhardt.
