In fiscal 2009-10, Thermo Fisher Scientific launched a number of products across all its divisions in India

In the recent years, Thermo Fisher Scientific has been in the news for its acquisitions, both globally as well as in India. It is a wholly-owned Indian subsidiary of the US-based Thermo Fisher Scientific. The company came into existence as a result of the merger between Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific in 2006. It supplies consumables, and analytical, scientific and laboratory instruments.

According to BioSpectrum estimates, in FY 2009-10, the life sciences turnover of Thermo Fisher Scientific stood at Rs 210 crore. In FY 2007-08, Thermo Fisher entered into an agreement to acquire Qualigens Fine Chemicals, a division of GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (GSK India).

Thermo Fisher also acquired the analytical technologies and environment instrumentation divisions of Chemito Technologies that is headquartered in Mumbai. Chemito is a local supplier of analytical instruments for life sciences and environmental monitoring applications. In addition, Chemito manufactures its own analytical instruments, including gas chromatography, atomic absorption and UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Thermo Fisher has a Rs 46.15 crore ($10 mn) facility in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to support the demand for biopharma services. The 150,000 sq.ft. facility focuses on packaging, global distribution and logistics management of tightly regulated pharmaceutical samples to patients participating in clinical trials across the globe. It complements the company's existing clinical services operations in the US, Europe and Asia.

In fiscal 2009-10, the Indian subsidiary of Thermo Fisher Scientific launched a number of products across all its divisions in India. The Laboratory Products Group (LPG) of the company launched a couple of products in the centrifuges space, including the Thermo Scientific Heraeus & Sorvall three-liter general purpose centrifuge series. The Thermo Scientific Heraeus Megafuge 40 and Sorvall ST 40 centrifuge series provide industry-leading capacity and ergonomics for routine sample preparations. The Thermo Scientific Heraeus Multifuge X3 and Sorvall Legend XT centrifuges incorporate market-leading technology for unsurpassed high-throughput processing.
