Located in Pune, Vidya Pratisthan was started by union agriculture
minister Sharad Pawar, who in 1972 wanted to transform 120 acres of
barren land in Baramati into a world renowned educational and
technological hub. The first institution of the Vidya Pratisthan, Bal
Vikas Mandir, an English medium school began operations in 1973 in this
campus.
The campus that houses the School of Biotechnology which was
established in 1972. The objectives of which include, development of
human resource potential in the area of biotechnology, bioinformatics,
establishment of contract research facility, undertake public awareness
programs to disseminate information to the relevant target groups on a
regular basis and development of a Center for Studies in Biodiversity.
The school offers a BSc in biotechnology, BSc in applied biotechnology
(40 seats) and MSc in biotechnology (24 seats).
A state-of-the-art infrastructure with respective laboratories for
molecular biology, tissue culture, microbiology, biochemistry, cell
preservation, basic sciences and bioinformatics has been established.
This infrastructure with complimentary expertise start the contract
research facility.
