Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh appreciated the excellent progress of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) during the CSIR Society Meeting on May 25, 2005. The ministers of Finance, Commerce, Industry and Science & Technology attended the meeting. The Prime Minister said that he was inspired by some recent examples of people-oriented technology development done by CSIR. He particularly referred to the development of ultra-filtration technology by CSIR, using a membrane that filters even the virus besides the bacteria and other impurities from water. He said, "The device can work with a hand pump also and can work in a village without electricity. This is an example of socially relevant research." He urged all MPs to consider installing such devices across the country using the funds available under MPLADS. The Prime Minister is the president of the CSIR Society.
