The Government of Karnataka has allocated Rs 57 crore for the reconstruction of the Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC), which suffered extensive damage due to a fire on January 14, 2025. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during the Karnataka Budget 2025, reinforcing the state’s commitment to revitalizing its biotech ecosystem.
Located in Electronics City, the Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre serves as a vital incubation hub for biotechnology startups and research initiatives. The fire caused severe damage to high-end laboratory equipment and valuable research materials, disrupting the progress of numerous startups and research projects. Recognizing the centre’s critical role in Karnataka’s biotech sector, the government has prioritized its restoration.
Of the Rs 57 crore allocated, ₹20 crore has been specifically earmarked for FY26 to facilitate phased reconstruction and re-equipment of the centre. This financial commitment underscores the government’s dedication to fostering innovation, supporting biotech entrepreneurs, and strengthening Karnataka’s position as a global biotechnology hub.
The Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre has been instrumental in advancing biopharma, agritech, medtech, and industrial biotech solutions. The reconstruction efforts will not only restore lost infrastructure but also upgrade facilities to better serve the next generation of biotech innovators.
