Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, recently launched the online training programme on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medical Education developed by National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), an autonomous body of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The objective of the programme is to expose nearly 50,000 doctors to Artificial Intelligence and provide a basic understanding of its practical applications in medicine, investigation, clinical decision making, research and medical education. The initiative aims to enhance the digital competencies of physicians and enable them to make effective use of AI-based tools in healthcare delivery and academic practice.

Anupriya emphasised that the use of Artificial Intelligence in the healthcare sector is not an option but a necessity. She said that the purpose of AI is not to replace doctors, but to increase the capacity of doctors, to fill the gaps caused by the shortage of medical professionals and to reduce the burden of patients.

Punya Salila Srivastava, Union Health Secretary said that the launch of the online training initiative on Artificial Intelligence in healthcare is a significant step towards strengthening medical education and enhancing the competencies of doctors across the country.
