To update healthcare providers with global best practices followed while managing diabetes related complications and highlight the Indian perspective of diabetes management, Lupin has launched a book, first in the series, which aims to improve the quality of diabetes care by sharing adequate references and clinical case studies on experience-based medicine.

Lupin is working on the other books currently and intends to launch them in the next 1.5 years which will be a big boon to all medical professionals. While interacting with BioSpectrum, Lupin shares some insights into the organisation’s vision for better management of lifestyle diseases and initiatives that the organisation is working on.

What other issues would be covered in the following books in the series?

The book ‘Complications in Diabetes Mellitus: Bench to Bedside’ is the first title in a four-part series. The series focuses on complications associated with diabetes and Lupin intends to launch the remaining three titles within a span of 1.5 years. The second book in series will cover ‘diabetes and nephropathy’ and is already under development.

The series’ aim is to update healthcare providers with the global best practices followed while managing diabetes related complications. It also highlights the Indian perspective of diabetes management. Through the series, we hope to improve the quality of diabetes care across the country by sharing adequate references and clinical case studies on experience-based medicine with the readers.

What has been the response with the current book from healthcare professionals?

The e-book was hosted on Amazon’s global platform on November 19, 2020. The virtual book launch was attended by 1005 doctors from across India. Doctors who attended the launch acknowledged the utility of this book which features inputs from 19 contributing authors with a pan India representation. These authors have highlighted India specific barriers and challenges they have faced while managing patients with diabetes and cardiac complications. The book also provides a global update on clinical strategy for improving diabetes care and also an Indian perspective on diabetes management. So far, over 150 copies of the book have been sold on Amazon.

Will Lupin be looking at harnessing other mediums as well to spread awareness on CVDs and diabetes management?

Apart from e-book, Lupin has entered a strategic partnership with multiple scientific societies and foreign universities to bring the best of global practices in CVDs and diabetes management to the Indian physicians.

Lupin in strategic partnership with Birmingham City University (BCU) launched two advancing diabetes care programme (MSc, & PG Diploma in Advancing Diabetes Care) for the first time in India. The two-year programme which are conducted on monthly basis through modules, virtual classes and web lectures aims at building advanced skills and evidenced-based diabetes care practice amongst enrolled physicians. The course covers theoretical, clinical, practical aspects of good diabetes care, to enable rapid improvement in the quality of diabetes care being delivered in practice.

Lupin has also tied up with the University of Leicester, UK for a six months long e-mentorship programme where eight subject matter experts from Leicester Diabetes Center (mentors) conducts live one-to-one interactions with enrolled Indian mentees and guides them through patients’ case-based discussion and virtual masterclasses on diabetes and its complications.

Is Lupin also working on other initiatives for future series? What other issues should India consider as top priority for better disease management?

Lupin aims to improve patient outcomes in diabetes and hypertension by adding value at each level of healthcare system like diseases awareness, screening, quality of healthcare provided, patient education and access to quality medicines and treatment, and overall patient adherence to the therapy.

Another unique patient initiative introduced by the firm is their Dietitian & Nutrition Assistance Programme (DNA). In a strategic partnership with ‘Possible’, Lupin initiated virtual DNA programmes to help diabetes patients understand the role of diet, nutrition, and diet plan in management of blood glucose. 2,000+ diabetes patients have been covered through 100+ DNA programmes till date.
