The biotechnology department at the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIIT) has a balanced mix of faculty drawn from both academia and industry with rich R&D exposure. It offers four-year BTech, five-year dual BTech-MTech degree and PhD in biotechnology. In the academic year 2012-13, the total number of 30 students were admitted to both the courses. The department has benefited from an open-ended budget policy resulting in the provision of state-of-the-art research facilities.
The department is involved in the active research programs in subject areas of functional genomics, microbial biotechnology, bioremediation, molecular mechanisms of therapeutic properties of Indian medicinal plants, and nanobiotechnology applications. These projects have been supported by sponsored project grants secured in the past three years totaling close to Rs 4.05 crore from government funding agencies including Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science and Technology, All India Council for Technical Education, and AYUSH (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare). There are 26 students pursuing PhD among which 18 are provided research fellowships from the funds of JIIT, four students are funded through DBT/DST research projects, and two from DST's INSPIRE fellowships, one part-time student from Panacea Biotec and one biotech department (JIIT) faculty.
Since 2008, the department has published nine research papers in the national journals. The number of research publications in international journals during the same period stood at 176. Also, the total capital expenditure on cost of consumables and subscribing biotech related books and journals has doubled in the past year. Faculty fostered collaboration with six companies and 26 departments/institutes for sharing of research reagents and/or collaborative research projects.
As per the department administration, the fee structure of JIIT is lowest amongst the contemporary institutes/universities, because it operates under the aegis of Jaiprakash Seva Sansthan (JSS), a not-for-profit trust. The department networked students in securing a place in MS/PhD programs in Indiana University, US, University of Pennsylvania, US, Max planck Institute of Heart and Lung research, University of Calgary, Canada, Ludwigs Maxmillan University, Munich, State college, Pennsylvania, Northeastern University, Boston, and University of Iowa and International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Delhi South Campus, Defence Research and Development Organization, National Institute of Immunology, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, and National Brain Research Centre.
