The thrust areas of research at the School of Biotechnology at the Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya are microbial bioremediation of toxic heavy metals and organic pollutants in addition to the search for novel bioactive compounds from microbial resources. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has given B+ accreditation to the university.

The school has been working in active collaboration with the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) , Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh and is in process of collaborating with corporate houses in designing the course structure as per the market demand for biotech products. Between June 2008 and May 2012, three research papers were published in national journals, while two were published in international journals. Total value of government-sponsored projects commissioned during this period was Rs 12 lakh.

Till date, 14 batches of students have successfully passed their MSc examinations. The school of biotechnology regularly organizes short-term training courses, regional and national workshops and seminars. Apart from improving research infrastructure, the school has trained most of its students mostly for higher research.
