Hindustan Syringes and Medical Device (HMD) will partner with the World Health Organization (WHO) in a campaign to prevent deaths and serious infections caused due to reusable syringes and unsafe injection practices, as per reports.

'Hindustan Syringes and Medical Devices shall partner with WHO and play a very crucial role in this third global health initiative to help prevent millions of deaths and serious infections,' the company said in a statement. 'This by-far is the biggest of WHO's global initiative since the remarkable success of polio eradication and hand-wash awareness campaigns,' it added.

The campaign, to be launched shortly, aims to completely eliminate the practice of using re-usable syringes and replace it with auto-disable (AD) syringes. It will also focus on broad-basing the use of auto disposal syringes from immunization to therapeutic usage.

'Syringes should be a life giver, not life taker. It is a very fulfilling moment for my company and an emotional one at personal level as thousands of people unnecessarily lose life in our country due to unsafe injection practices,' said Mr Rajiv Nath, joint managing director, HMD.
