In order to provide additional training in the field of biotechnology, the biotech students of the college are given training in research institutions and organizations

The Department of Biotechnology at the KS Rangasamy College of Technology, an autonomous institution affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, has a good infrastructure with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for students. Students of the biotech department are allowed to use the laboratory facilities at any time of the day. The department offers MSc, BTech and PhD courses in biotechnology. The school is maintaining a Cyanobacterial Glue Bank that is open for other educational and research institutions. The plant tissue culture facility and the modern cell line facilities available at the department are being used by the students for their project work.

In order to acquire additional training in the field of biotechnology, students of the biotech department are placed in research institutions and organizations during summer. The department also provides assistance to students in preparing for the CSIR, UGC and other competitive examinations. Activities such as mushroom cultivation, biofertilizer production, preparing plant tissue culture, growing medical plants, and producing vermiculture are some of the extension programs of employment for students even after graduation.

The department has 22 full-time faculty members and five part-time members. In total, there are 16 labs dedicated for biotech students. The department has adopted the syllabus framed by Anna University, Chennai. Meanwhile, the faculties of the department take initiatives to update the syllabus in-tune with the requirements of the industry. So far, the department has published 42 research papers in national and international journals between 2007 and 2010. In addition, it has filed three Indian patents in last three years and got patent approvals for two from the regulatory agencies.

In the academic year 2009-10, the biotech department has spent 1.32 lakh on books, 2 lakh on journals, 13.62 lakh on lab equipments and 3.75 lakh on consumables and reagents. The department runs a number of R&D programs in an effort to expose students to practical training. As a result of the research activities, the department has developed five products that were transferred to the industry and has earned a royalty income of 1.74 lakh in the academic year 2009-10. The department has attracted externally-funded research projects worth 22.71 lakh from the government in various areas of biotechnology and industry-sponsored projects worth 5.27 lakh.
