Bangalore is top biotech city

Biotech companies from the bioclusters in West and South generated revenues in excess of $1 billion in 2007-08. Maharashtra emerged as the leading state with $900 million in revenues, while Bangalore was the top biotech city contributing $550 million in sales during 2007-08. The biotech players in India are well spread across the country. And for the past few years, it has been observed that no single cluster has a monopoly on the revenues generated by companies headquartered in their respective regions. This trend was observed in 2007-08 too.

TOP CLUSTER

  • The biotech companies in the Western Cluster, comprising the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa, generated Rs 4,452.37 crore in revenues.

  • The West biocluster led the market in terms of revenues generated by the companies in its region. Out of the total revenues of Rs 10,274 crore generated by the biotech companies in India in 2007-08, the West's share was 43.3 percent. It was closely followed by South at 42.2 percent.

  • The Southern biocluster covering Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu was close behind West with biotech revenues of Rs 4,368.63 crore. Nine of the Top 20 biotech companies have their base in the South.

  • The Northern cluster accounted for 14 percent share of the total biotech revenues of Rs 10,274 crore generated in 2007-08.

  • The west region's contribution was led by Serum Institute of India, the No. 1 biotech company in the country, which accounted for over 22 percent share of the total revenues of Rs 4,452.37 crore clocked by the companies in the west. India's largest biotech group, Biocon accounted for over 25 percent share of the total contribution of Rs 4,369 crore from the Southern biocluster.

TOP STATE

  • Among the states, Maharashtra topped the contribution with 35 percent share generating Rs 3615 crore. Karnataka was second with 21.6 percent share (Rs 2220 crore) and Andhra Pradesh followed it with Rs 1,830 crore in value terms and with a 17.82 percent share.

  • Almost three-fourths of the total biotech business in the country was contributed by the companies in these three states.

TOP CITY

  • Bangalore was the No.1 biotech city generating revenues of Rs 2,220 crore and 21.6 percent share.

  • Mumbai was second with revenues of Rs 1,975 crore and Hyderabad was next with Rs 1,830 crore in biotech revenues.

  • The NCR region accounted for 14 percent share (Rs 1,453 crore) and was followed by Pune with 12 percent share and revenues of Rs 1,254 crore.

MAJOR PLAYERS

  • Panacea Biotech was the largest player in the North contributing more than 46 percent of the total biotech revenues from the NCR cluster.

  • Serum was the largest contributor to the West with 27.3 percent share While Biocon led the Karnataka regions fortunes, Nuziveedu Seeds, the country's largest bioagri company, with revenues of Rs 303 crore, was the largest contributor to the business from Andhra Pradesh with close to 17 percent share.

  • The Top 3 companies in West accounted for 29 percent share of the region.

  • The Top 3 companies in North generated 67 percent of the total revenues of the region.

  • The Top 3 companies in South contributed 35 percent of the revenues of the region.

  • The Top 3 companies in Maharashtra accounted for 35 percent share in the region.

  • The Top 3 companies in Gujarat generated 30 percent of the total revenues in Gujarat.

  • The Top 3 companies in Karnataka contributed 63 percent of the total revenues.

  • The Top 3 companies' share in Andhra Pradesh was 35.46 percent.
