Defence Institute of Bio-Energy Research (DIBER), a unit of the DRDO, has scientifically corroborated the medicinal properties of the plant Kasani (cichorium intybus) which is believed to be helpful in treatment of diabetes, asthma, blood pressure, liver and kidney diseases.

DIBER conducted the research after signing an MoU with Uttarakhand Research Circle (URC), a division of the state forest department, in June this year.

During the research, it was found that Kasani is a rich source of carbohydrate and proteins besides having anti-diabetic and anti-oxidant properties.

Uttarakhand government has decided to apply for intellectual property rights (IPR) of the wonder herb. Besides Kasani, DIBER is also conducting research on Vajradanti (potentilla fulgens) which is used to treat teeth- and gum-related problems.

The project is being funded under collaborative research provision of the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority. Forest department is facilitating manpower, field visits and traditional knowledge while DIBER is contributing by conducting scientific research.
