Out of 1,254 applications received by the KIIT School of Biotechnology (KSBT) in the academic year 2012-13, 50 students were granted admission to MSc biotechnology course. KSBT has developed several world-class, ultramodern laboratory facilities in various verticals of biotechnology. Apart from having a well equipped bioinformatics laboratory, all the students at the department are provided a free laptop.

The school boasts of being guided by two nobel laureates, Prof. Richard Ernst and Prof. Rolf Zinkernagel. The masters level students from the school are sent to several international laboratories for their project work and has been getting fellowships from the host universities/institutions like ETH Zurich, Switzerland; University of Lausanne, Switzerland; Lund University, Sweden; The Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG), Switzerland; University of Erlangen, Germany; National University of Singapore, Singapore; and Texas A&M University, US.

The school hosts one international conference, one national conference and 5-6 workshops every year. It has been visited by 54 SS Bhatnagar awardees so far to deliver lectures. The school has tie ups with 13 international laboratories and 11 national biotech industries. It has received 27 research projects which are all running and supported by Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science and Technology, Indian Council of Medical Research, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, UBS Optimus, and Melinda Gates Foundation. The school has created a R&D hub by integrating researchers, technology business incubator (established with Biotech focus, supported by National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), DST, Government of India), Technology Commercialization Facilitating Agency (TCFA), supported by Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Technology Development Board (TDB), Technopreneur Promotion Program (TePP), Technopark Technology Commercialization Facilitation Agency (TCFA) and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) and innovation centre, promoted by the KIIT university. The incubator is housing 21 start-up companies, which is unique in the whole country.
