The department of a microbiology at Gujarat University is more than three decades old and offers specialized masters level courses as well as doctoral programs in biotechnology. The department has been actively involved in research projects in microbial technology and biotechnology in partnership with other agencies such as Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission (GSBTM), Department of Science and Technology (DST), and a few industry partners as well. The focus areas at this institution are in the different domains related to microbiology such as systematic bacteriology, industrial and environmental microbial technology, environmental biotechnology and bioprocess and industrial microbiology.
The department accepts approximately a tenth of the student applications to its program. It also has a good record of publishing research articles in international as well as national journals. The faculty members are all highly experienced, with a few of them affiliated to other universities as well as PhD guides. The department has separate laboratory facilities and classrooms for its MSc and PhD students which can accommodate about 20-25 students.
