Hidden deep within the human anatomy, where the brain, ears, eyes, major blood vessels and critical nerves converge, the skull base is among the most complex regions to treat surgically. Conditions affecting this delicate area often demand far more than a single-specialty approach, requiring the combined expertise of ENT specialists, neurosurgeons and oncological surgeons, supported by advanced surgical techniques and careful treatment planning.
Recognising the need for such integrated care, Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, a unit of Manipal Hospitals Group, has launched the Manipal Skull Base Institute, the first of its kind in Eastern India, dedicated to the comprehensive management of complex skull base conditions and hearing disorders.
The institute brings multiple specialties and advanced surgical expertise under one roof, enabling patients to access coordinated care spanning diagnosis, treatment, surgery, rehabilitation and long-term follow-up.
As part of its specialised offering, the institute will provide comprehensive cochlear implant care for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss who may not benefit adequately from conventional hearing aids, with the programme encompassing the complete continuum of care, from detailed hearing assessment and pre-operative evaluation to implant surgery, device activation, auditory rehabilitation and post-operative follow-up.
With individualised treatment plans for both children and adults, the approach aims to support speech, language and learning in children while helping adults improve hearing, communication and quality of life. By bringing these specialised disciplines and services together, the institute aims to facilitate collaborative diagnosis, precise treatment planning and comprehensive, coordinated care for patients with complex skull base and hearing-related conditions.
The institute will emphasise multidisciplinary evaluation, detailed diagnostic assessment, individualised treatment planning and advanced surgical management, depending on the patient's condition. By bringing together specialists from different disciplines, the centre aims to facilitate seamless decision-making for complex cases and provide patients with a comprehensive continuum of care.

CliMed should be understood as a research and decision-support framework

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur have developed CliMed, a climate-informed and spatially explicit modelling framework for dengue risk assessment over India. The model brings together daily climate information, land-use characteristics, human population data, settlement context and mosquito-species suitability to generate interpretable risk signals for Aedes-borne dengue transmission.
Dengue risk is shaped by several interacting conditions. Temperature influences mosquito biting, development, survival and the time required for the virus to become transmissible inside the mosquito. Rainfall can create breeding opportunities, while very heavy rainfall may also disturb immature stages. Humidity affects mosquito activity and survival. Land-use, settlement pattern and population distribution determine whether suitable mosquito conditions are likely to translate into meaningful human exposure. CliMed has been designed to read these factors together, rather than treating dengue risk as a simple statistical association between weather and reported cases.
CliMed is intended to support preparedness by adding an environmental and biological layer to dengue risk interpretation. Reported case counts remain essential, but they may be delayed, unevenly recorded or influenced by testing and reporting practices. CliMed therefore provides a complementary view: it identifies days and locations where climate, vector ecology and exposure conditions may be becoming more favourable for transmission.
CliMed should be understood as a research and decision-support framework. It does not diagnose dengue, replace surveillance data or predict confirmed clinical cases by itself. Its outputs are interpretable risk signals that should be compared with field surveillance, local vector information, public-health records and expert review before operational decisions are made.
The immediate goal is to strengthen dialogue between climate scientists, epidemiologists, public-health officials and local administrations by providing transparent maps and indicators that explain why a place or season may deserve closer attention.

GloCas9is highly stable and maintains its structure and activity even at higher temperatures compared to conventional enzymes

Scientists at the Bose Institute in Kolkata have created a CRISPR protein that can help scientists observe molecular scissors called the Cas9 enzyme as it enables them to edit the genome using the CRISPR – Cas9system for the treatment of genetic diseases, including cancer.
CRISPR-Cas9 was designed to cut and correct DNA with precision. Scientists have not been able to observe Cas9 in real time in living cells, however. Traditional detection methods rely on connecting or breaking open cells, making this process impossible to track.
In the new study, the researchers have combined Cas9 with a split nano-luciferase enzyme derived from a deep-sea shrimp protein to create a bio-luminous version of Cas9 called GloCas9, which glows inside cells.
By combining gene editing with light emission, GlockaS9 is leading the way in the emerging field of theratracking, a unique example of looking at molecular gene therapy in a moving state. This invention brings us closer to a future where scientists will not only be able to fine-tune genes but also witness the process of treatment firsthand.

Highlighting an underappreciated role of antibodies, not just as chemical binders, but also mechanical modulators in our fight against disease

A recent study from researchers at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS) in Kolkata, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) reveals that IgM not only binds to pathogens but can also mechanically stabilise bacterial toxins, preventing them from harming our cells.
This could inspire new therapies by designing antibodies that mechanically stiffen dangerous proteins and disarming them.
The research focused on Protein L, a molecule from the bacterium Finegoldia magna. Protein L is known as a “superantigen” because it can bind antibodies in unusual ways, potentially disrupting normal immune function. What makes this study remarkable is its use of single-molecule force spectroscopy — a cutting-edge technique that applies tiny, precise forces to individual molecules to see how they behave under stress.
The scientists discovered that when IgM binds to Protein L, it significantly increases the protein’s mechanical stability. In simple terms, IgM acts like a brace, making it harder for the protein to unfold or break apart under force. This effect was concentration-dependent — higher amounts of IgM gave Protein L more resistance to mechanical stress.
The team also used computer simulations to explore why this happens. They found that IgM’s multiple binding sites can engage Protein L at several points simultaneously, creating a synergistic stabilizing effect. This is different from smaller antibodies, which lack the same stabilising power.

This hydrogel serves as a stable reservoir for anti-cancer drugs

In a multi-institutional research led by researchers from Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) and Bose Institute Kolkata, an advanced injectable hydrogel has been developed for localised cancer treatment.
This innovative hydrogel-based therapy delivers anti-cancer drugs directly to tumor sites, significantly reducing the side effects typically associated with conventional cancer treatments.
Hydrogels are water-based, three-dimensional polymer networks capable of absorbing and retaining fluids. Their unique structure mimics living tissues, making them suitable for biomedical applications. This newly developed hydrogel acts as a stable reservoir for anti-cancer drugs and releases them in a controlled manner, responding to specific conditions in the tumor microenvironment.
The hydrogel, composed of ultra-short peptides – biocompatible and biodegradable building blocks of proteins – is designed to remain insoluble in biological fluids, ensuring it stays localized at the injection site. It responds to elevated glutathione (GSH) levels, a molecule abundant in tumor cells. Upon encountering high GSH levels, the hydrogel triggers a controlled drug release directly into the tumor, minimizing its interaction with healthy tissues and reducing systemic side effects.
In preclinical trials on a murine model of breast cancer, the hydrogel showcased remarkable efficacy. A single injection of the hydrogel, loaded with the chemotherapy drug Doxorubicin, resulted in a ~75% reduction in tumor size within 18 days. Crucially, the hydrogel remained localised at the tumor site, steadily releasing the drug over time without causing detectable side effects on other organs.
This innovative delivery system enhances the drug's effectiveness while reducing the required dosage, thus minimising toxicity.

Aiming at raising awareness about prevailing eye care issues, their prevention, and care

CBM India, in partnership with SBI Foundation, has announced the Project 'SBIF Eye Care', aimed at reducing avoidable blindness in the Howrah district of West Bengal. The two-year project, spanning from March 2024 to February 2026, focuses on delivering inclusive, accessible, and affordable eye care services.
Covering 12 blocks in the Howrah district, the project addresses a critical public health concern and a leading cause of blindness worldwide- cataracts.
Several factors contribute to this challenge- the need to expand access to eye health services, low awareness about cataract symptoms and treatment options, the growing demand for more surgical capacity and infrastructure, and the limited access to follow-up care, medications, and rehabilitative services.
The project addresses these challenges and prioritises sight-restoring procedures, targeting to perform 3,000 free cataract surgeries for people from marginalised communities. SBIF has been a pioneer in cataract care projects pan India; their programme aims to improve access to healthcare and help those in need of cataract surgery.
Apart from this, the initiative aims at raising awareness about prevailing eye care issues, their prevention, and care, indirectly benefitting over 1,76,000 people, and offering eye screenings, counseling, and safety measures for eye care to over 30,000 individuals, including children and adults with disabilities.
These goals will be achieved through a multifaceted approach, leveraging CBM India's Inclusive Vision Centers, eye screening camps, awareness camps, and door-to-door community eye screenings.
