To improve existing technologies by chemical reactions under more environmentally friendly conditions

A team of scientists from the Mohali-based Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has developed an innovative light-powered nano-catalyst to eliminate toxic solvents, high-temperature and energy-intensive processes in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals.
This makes these processes cleaner and far more energy efficient. Globally, there is a need to reduce pollution, energy consumption, and the use of toxic chemicals in industrial processes.
The nanomaterial has been designed and synthesised from a combination of gold, BODPI and palladium. It functions with the ability to absorb light energy by gold nanoparticles, which are again transferred to the BODPI molecule and finally to the active catalyst palladium. Palladium uses this transferred energy to conduct chemical reactions more efficiently, reducing energy consumption throughout the process.
Combining three different components – gold, BODIPI, and palladium – into a single system helps in a more powerful and sustainable catalytic process.
This technology can enable cleaner and more cost-effective production of drugs and chemicals, reducing environmental pollution and energy consumption.

Taps into fast growing quick commerce & plans expansion into modern trade

Punjab-based Leeford Healthcare is targeting the fast-growing health and personal care segment with its science-based skincare line of products with it’s Alite brand of skincare, as it looks to cater to a growing need in India for affordable, ingredient-based acne care solutions.
India’s skincare market is on the rise and the anti-acne category is a key driver of it. Estimates for India’s anti-acne market size of ~ $350 million in 2024 are based on increasing awareness, acne incidence for younger people, and science-based products.
Amit Gupta - Founder & Managing Director - Leeford Healthcare, said “Our experience with 75+ therapeutic segments has shown that outcomes are closely linked to consistency. In skincare, we saw an opportunity to bring a similar approach—creating solutions that consumers can use comfortably over time, rather than short-term fixes.”
A trend in the skincare industry is that ingredients are being recognised and consumers are looking at formulation transparency and performance. Alite’s formulations are composed of Niacinamide PC, which is known for skin repair and tolerance, DSBC (Silanediol Salicylate), which is a new derivative to treat acne “& repair acneic skin” with hydration.
These ingredients represent the transition from one to multi-purpose to next-generation formulations that can also improve skin compatibility, which is still underpenetrated in the mid-priced range.
Skincare is part of Leeford’s larger strategy to build a diversified consumer healthcare portfolio. With a presence across 75+ therapeutic segments & distribution network of over 1 million retail touchpoints, the company is well-positioned to scale consumer brands, particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, where demand for affordable and quality skincare is growing rapidly.
According to industry data, over 60% of skincare consumption growth is now coming from non-metro markets, so distribution strength is a key competitive advantage.
The company is expanding Alite's presence in General trade (pharmacies & retail outlets), Modern trade, E-commerce and quick commerce platforms. India’s online beauty and personal care market will also grow rapidly, with 20-25% CAGR (expected).

Sehat Sevika model has already demonstrated measurable impact in states such as Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh

Punjab has initiated a programme to train and deploy women community health entrepreneurs in villages, to strengthen last-mile healthcare access and support rural livelihoods.
Bahaar Foundation has announced the launch of the Sehat Sevika programme in partnership with the Punjab Development Commission (PDC), marking the beginning of an effort to test and refine a community-based healthcare and women’s entrepreneurship model in the state.

The Sehat Sevika Programme commenced in January 2026 with an initial cohort of 100 Sehat Sevikas in Rupnagar district. Insights from this pilot will help shape a phased expansion across other districts in the state in the coming years.
To support implementation, Bahaar has embedded a dedicated Project Management Unit (PMU) within the Punjab Development Commission to oversee training, monitoring, and ecosystem coordination. The Indian School of Business (ISB), Mohali, will conduct an independent impact assessment of the initial 100-village pilot to generate evidence and learnings from the pilot.
The Sehat Sevika model has already demonstrated measurable impact in states such as Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh. In Bastar district, two batches of Sehat Sevikas (locally referred to as Sangwaris) have, over the last three years, supported a population of approximately 50,000 and established themselves as credible and trusted health and wellness support persons in their communities, while generating supplemental income for their families.

By equipping women with critical knowledge, monetizable skills, networks, and ongoing support systems, the Sehat Sevika programme enables them to generate steady supplemental income while strengthening public health systems.
Bahaar Foundation is inviting CSR leaders, philanthropic institutions, healthcare partners, and development agencies to join the Impact Coalition to support the programme’s phased expansion as the model evolves and scales across the state.

Clinic offers a holistic approach to managing childhood myopia

Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, one of India’s largest networks of eye care facilities, has launched a specialised Myopia Clinic in Chandigarh to address the alarming rise of near-sightedness among children and young adults.
The launch event was done under the aegis of Chandigarh Ophthalmic Society and was graced by doctors from the hospital and was followed by an awareness workshop highlighting early signs of myopia, lifestyle risk factors, and preventive strategies for parents and educators.
The clinic offers a holistic approach to managing childhood myopia, including early detection, counselling, education, and regular follow-up care. Equipped with advanced diagnostic technology and a specialised team of paediatric ophthalmologists and optometrists, it provides personalised treatment plans tailored to each child’s needs.
It also offers a comprehensive range of myopia-control options from eye drops and specialised glasses to soft contact lenses and orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses to effectively manage the condition and minimize potential complications.
Dr Rajiv Mirchia, Head Clinical Services – Mirchia’s Laser Eye Center, a unit of Dr Agarwals Eye Hosptial said, “The launch of our Myopia Clinic in Chandigarh is a significant step towards addressing the growing burden of myopia in Punjab and North India. With childhood cases rising at an alarming pace, our aim is to provide comprehensive care that not only corrects vision but also helps slow the progression of the condition. Through this centre, we want to empower families with awareness, timely intervention, and access to the latest treatment options.”
Dr Anin Sethi Senior Pediatric Ophthalmologist said, “Myopia, or near-sightedness, is rising rapidly worldwide, with countries such as China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan already seeing epidemic levels, affecting up to 95% of teenagers and young adults. By 2050, nearly half of the global population could be myopic. In India, prevalence among urban children aged 5–15 has increased from 4.44% in 1999 to 21.15% in 2019 and is projected to reach 48% by 2050. In Punjab, a 2007 study reported nearly 10% of schoolchildren in urban areas were myopic. Growing academic pressure, reduced outdoor time, and increased screen usage are contributing to higher rates across North India.
Beyond clinical care, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital plans to conduct school-based awareness campaigns and workshops for parents, children, ophthalmologists, and optometrists across Chandigarh and Punjab, reinforcing community-level understanding of myopia prevention.
The hospital’s long-term vision is to make myopia management a public health priority. With rising prevalence and increasing severity, the clinic aims to serve as a regional hub for early detection, intervention, and long-term control of childhood myopia.

Scientists from the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), in collaboration with researchers from Advanced Centre for Treatment Research & Education in Cancer, Tata Memorial Centre (ACTREC) and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B), have developed a novel one-step colloidal synthesis method for fabricating PEGylated semi-shells (SS) with nano-cup morphology at room temperature.
The novel one-step colloidal synthesis method for nanoparticles with a unique shell structure with nano-cup morphology that is partly covered with polyethylene glycol (PEG) can help with photothermal therapy (PTT) to treat cancer.
The simplified yet highly unique approach circumvents all the drawbacks of previously reported processes by using a biocompatible metal-organic framework (MOF), ZIF-8, as a sacrificial template. The synthesis employs mild reducing agents like ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) at room temperature.
Future studies aim to explore chemo-photothermal therapy for highly selective oncological applications and investigate the potential of these semi shells in Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) biosensing, leveraging their unique optical properties for advanced biomedical applications.

Could you share some of 2024’s most impactful milestones for RNT Health Insights and key plans for 2025?
During 2024, RNT Health Insights achieved significant milestones, including receiving the US FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for two of our Medical Devices- one intended for Early Gastric Cancer detection and the other for detecting Early-stage Oesophageal Cancer. Oesophageal cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in India and the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, claiming over 540,000 lives annually. Its prognosis is notably poor, with a five-year survival rate of less than 20 per cent. This is primarily due to the associated high miss rate of detection during early stages and attributed to the fact that it is almost always detected at an advanced stage.
Likewise, despite gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures being the gold standard method for the diagnosis of gastric cancer, the current miss rate for the diagnosis of the disease during these procedures stands at 4.6-25.8 per cent, depending upon the endoscopists’ experience and visual observations. Recently, we have also secured the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) Test License in India, and were honoured with prestigious non-dilutive grants including the WTFund grant, as well as the Pfizer INDovation NIPER-A edition programme grant, conducted by Pfizer, Social Alpha, Department of Pharmaceuticals, and NITI Aayog and also a Research and Development grant from Emergent Ventures- Mercatus Center at George Mason University, USA. In 2025, we are focused on obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals and then commercialising our breakthrough medical devices in India, aiming to transform gastrointestinal diagnostics across all endoscopy suites nationwide.
How does the technology behind your AI-assisted detection tool improve real-time diagnostic precision?
The technology behind our artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted detection tool integrates advanced spatial and temporal computer vision algorithms. This allows for the meticulous analysis of every single video frame in real time, detecting subtle lesions while also understanding the dynamic relationships of various parameters over time. Our models are designed for optimal latency, processing data and delivering predictions within 25 milliseconds per frame to ensure smooth integration into existing endoscopy workflows. This unique combination of high accuracy and swift processing, along with a robust learning framework trained on a diverse and heterogenous dataset of cancerous as well as non-cancerous lesions, positions our medical devices as an essential tool in enhancing diagnostic accuracy during endoscopic procedures.
Are there any upcoming product launches or partnerships in the pipeline?
Our Automated Endoscopy Report Generation software was launched in February 2025. It is a tool designed to streamline and automate the labour-intensive manual reporting workflows in endoscopy suites. Our Automated Endoscopy Report Generation software, ReportGI, is available to use from March 15 onwards. Additionally, we are preparing for the launch of our esophageal and gastric cancer detection medical devices in India, after obtaining the CDSCO Manufacturing License and other necessary regulatory approvals, in the latter half of the year. This launch will be in collaboration with our pilot research hospital centres. We are also exploring opportunities to expand our product portfolio both horizontally and vertically, developing new algorithms in close collaboration with key opinion leaders in the field.
What are the key regulatory and market challenges you face in bringing AI-based diagnostic tools to broader markets?
Navigating the evolving landscape of regulatory standards for AI-driven Medical Devices presents significant challenges due to the nascent nature of this technology in healthcare. Our commitment to transparency and adherence to rigorous safety and efficacy standards are fundamental as we build our startup. Additionally, fostering stakeholder engagement, driving adoption, and aligning our developments with clinical practices and workflows are pivotal to our strategy, despite the inherent challenges in introducing novel diagnostic tools in the Indian healthcare market.
What are the current challenges and trends facing the medtech/ diagnostic startups in India?
The evolving landscape of medtech and diagnostic startups in India is characterised by a shift away from a one-size-fits-all approach in patient care towards personalised medicine. This is driven by the capability to analyse and interpret healthcare data with high accuracy and then provide actionable insights. Personalised diagnostics and the use of sophisticated algorithms, such as deep learning, are emerging as key trends and are shaping the future of healthcare technology. The primary challenges faced by startups in this sector include navigating the complex regulatory landscape, which is continuously adapting to such new technologies, and meeting the stringent requirements for clinical validation necessary to gain acceptance within the medical community.
To make a mark for themselves in the medtech sector, do Indian startups prefer getting global approvals first and then launching their products in India? Is there a trend, or are there challenges surrounding approvals in India for medtech startups? Or are there any quality constraints?
Indian medtech startups are increasingly focusing on capturing the domestic market before scaling globally, supported by the government's push for self-reliance in medical device manufacturing. Indian doctors have the finest training in the world and are adept at adopting and utilising new technology. However, a large portion of the cost of new medical technology is borne by the patients- and healthcare startups in India need to recognise the price sensitiveness of the Indian market. To build for the Indian medtech industry, and making a significant difference to the quality of Indian healthcare and then expanding globally is a fulfilling path, that startups like ours intend to undertake, and with initiatives like the Meditech Mitra scheme, the process of obtaining regulatory approvals in India has become more scientific and transparent and supportive for startups.
How has funding accelerated your growth, and are there any recent investments you’d like to highlight?
Our growth has been substantially accelerated by funding and support from organisations such as IKP Eden, WTFund, Social Alpha and Pfizer, Emergent Ventures, and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. These partnerships have not only provided financial backing through grants and funding support but have also facilitated essential hospital and research collaborations, helped us expand our technical team, and supported our progress towards critical regulatory milestones, allowing us to broaden our scope of operations and impact within the healthcare sector.

Researchers from Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST) Mohali, an autonomous institution of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), have developed an innovative “self-actuating” drug delivery system that could revolutionise the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by targeting inflammation directly within the joints so that therapeutic agents are released only when needed.
It is a smart system that responds directly to the biochemical signals in the inflamed synovial environment. By targeting specific inflammatory enzymes present in the joints, the system ensures that therapeutic agents are released only when needed, offering a more precise and safer treatment option for RA patients.
This breakthrough could offer a safer, more effective alternative to current RA treatments by eliminating the need for frequent drug injections and reducing systemic toxicity. The system enhances drug effectiveness by improving bioavailability and retention in the affected joints, leading to longer-lasting relief with fewer doses.
Beyond arthritis, the technology holds promise for managing other inflammatory diseases, such as synovitis and inflammatory bowel disease. It could also pave the way for smart biomaterials in regenerative medicine and personalised treatments. Additionally, its potential use in veterinary medicine for managing arthritis in animals highlights its versatility.

Nano-plastics could transform beneficial bacteria into carriers of antibiotic resistance genes

Nanoplastics derived from single-use plastic bottles (SUPBs) contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance (AR), shows a new study, underscoring an unrecognised public health risk.
Scientists from Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST) Mohali, an autonomous institution of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), traced how plastic nanoparticles could impact bacteria. Recognising the central role of Lactobacillus acidophilus in the gut microbiota, Dr Manish Singh and his team investigated whether nano-plastics could transform beneficial bacteria into carriers of AR genes and pose a risk to human gut microbiome health.
They utilised the used plastic water bottles to synthesise environmentally relevant nanoplastics particles as these polyethylene terephthalate bottle-derived nanoplastics (PBNPs) better represent the actual pollutant nanoplastics generated due to dumping of single use plastic bottles and containers.
The scientists demonstrated that PBNPs can facilitate the cross-species gene transfer from E. coli to Lactobacillus acidophilus, a significant bacteria found in human gut microbiota, through a process called horizontal gene transfer (HGT), particularly through outer membrane vesicle (OMV) secretion in bacteria.
Protecting beneficial gut bacteria is crucial for immune support, digestion, and disease prevention. Limiting nanoplastic contamination could help preserve gut microbiota integrity, minimising the chances of AR gene transfer from beneficial to pathogenic bacteria and supporting microbiome resilience.
With increasing plastic pollution, this finding highlights the need for strict safety guidelines, awareness programmes as well as the necessity of policies that prioritise responsible usage of plastics and it’s adequate waste management to safeguard the human health and microbiome stability.

Revolutionising post-surgical therapy with affordable, off-grid solution

In a significant breakthrough for post-surgical knee rehabilitation, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar have unveiled an innovative solution to make continuous passive motion (CPM) therapy more accessible and affordable. The team at IIT Ropar has developed a Completely Mechanical Passive Motion Machine for Knee Rehabilitation that has been awarded a patent.
Unlike traditional motorised CPM machines, which are expensive and depend on electricity, the newly developed device is entirely mechanical. It utilises a piston and pulley system, which stores air as the user pulls a handle, enabling smooth and controlled motion to aid in knee rehabilitation. This simple yet effective design eliminates the need for electricity, batteries, or motors, making it both lightweight and portable.
The mechanical CPM machine offers a promising alternative to costly electric machines that are often out of reach for many patients, especially in rural areas with unreliable electricity supply. By reducing the reliance on electricity, it makes continuous passive motion therapy feasible even in off-grid locations.
Additionally, its portability allows for patients to use it in the comfort of their homes, reducing the need for prolonged hospital stays and rehabilitation visits.
“This device has the potential to revolutionise knee rehabilitation in India, where access to advanced medical technology can be limited, particularly in rural areas,” said Dr Abhishek Tiwari, the lead researcher, along with his team comprising Suraj Bhan Mundotiya and Dr Samir C. Roy. “It’s designed to be a low-cost, sustainable solution that not only aids in recovery but also helps reduce the environmental impact associated with motorised devices”, he added.

Researchers of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh have come up with a prototype for establishment and characterisation of novel self-organising neurovascular organoids/ embryoids (NVOEs) entirely from autologous blood without any genetic maneuvering or morphogen supplementation.
This new model for generating mass of neurovascular tissues or neurovascular organoids/embryoids (NVOEs) from autologous blood can help in the investigation of impaired brain functioning and development by analysing in neuroimaging (preclinical) scans, correlating with altered blood supply.
The field of neural organoids is rapidly progressing and has fueled the hope (and hype) for improved understanding of brain development and functions, modeling of neural diseases, discovery of new drugs, and supply of surrogate sources of transplantation.
The researchers who are in the process of filing a patent for this at the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh, are employing these models to understand the genetic basis of neurosensory hearing loss and auditory comprehension challenges (altered central auditory activity) in children with congenital Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL) (early onset), with and without comorbid features (autistic- like behaviour) or neurodevelopmental defects (intellectual disability, language disorders).
